machines can be nasty during operation. in this case, an escalator in the New
York subway system went berzerk and just switched the direction while
people were on it. The chaos was programmed. But not only the direction
change was a problem, also the speed of the scalator changed to faster.

Later investigations brought up, that the motors of the escalator have failed and also the praking system. Thus the escalator speeded up thru the weight of all the people on it.

The NYTC is still in contact with the manufacturer of the escalator as a failing brake system is a severe incident and could cause severe injury or even death.
