Western Digital is well-known for harddisks and SSDs nowadays.
They belong to the most reliable disks out there with WD being
on the market since 1988. Their earlier biggest 2.5″ disk held 4TB
marking a new record as they were the first with such a disk.

When a lot of HDD space is needed, SSDs still are too expensive
albeit they offer trememndous speeds for data handling. Yet an
SSD would make out a good data archive as SSDs don’t like a
lot of writing but can be read hundreds of thousands times.

Once more it seems as if the end of HDD isn’t reached yet. Have we stated,
that Western Digital has brought out a 12.5mm HDD with 2TB capacity.
Now it seems as if Samsung (also part of HGST/WD now…) has managed
to squeeze 2 TB into a 9.5mm high HDD case which is just amazing.

Since the demand for more and more data space is ever so high, HGST
and Western Digital seem to have an answer for that issue also. As of
June 2013, customers will be able to fit 9.5mm high HDDs at 2.5″ form
factor into their low-profile notebook and still benefit from 1.5 TB!

It got quiet on the HDD market since Western Digital has shipped it’s first

is about to set a new mark and era in hard drives and their usability in
ultrabooks. An added SSD cache of 24GB helps seed up things a lot.

HGST, now a division of Western Digital, has made first tries to save data
on smaller space using Nano-Lithography. While common technologies
allow maximum 4 to 5TB per HDD, the Nanolithography technique allows
doubling the data density. That’s quite some space for today’s demands.

Just today it seems as if Western Digital has announced that in Q4 2013 first
HDDs with 5TB capacity are supposed to leave the gates of the WD factories.
Where 4 TB is currently the hardliner-maximum, WD is still convenient to
release their new data-libraries in time. If they’re helium-filled, is unknown.

12.5mm, 9mm,7mm – The HDDs of the smaller form factor have been
flattened time by time. the last generation (7mm) is supposed to be
placed into Ultrabooks. These however get flatter and flatter, too, so
another shrink has to be done. WD did so and brings 5mm Hybrid-HDDs.

It seems as if Western Digital wants to break antoher barrier. The new 7mm
drives come in 320GB and 500GB sizes and allow Ultrabook-Manufacturers
to offer more HDD capacity in their devices. Besides that, the drives are also
said to fit snuggly into 9mm bays. Another win for the HDD primus?

The new portable HDDs in the classic 2,5″ size are now upgraded and hold 2TB
of data. With this size one could fit a music archive of approx 240.000 Songs
or 117.000 RAW images with 17MP resolution. This is possible as WD has fit
4 platters into a 15mm high case. This HDD comes only as external USB3.0.

Believe it or not: Usually, Noteboos are supposed to be outlived by their data storages (HDD).
In my case the good old notebook (now 8 years old!) has outlived the second HDD!

Sad but true that the f***ed HDD was a Samsung HDD which are usually known as being very
