China-GPS BeiDou going live
While GPS is the most commonly used technology in the world when it comes
to navigation and other position-relevant applications, China seems to
mistrust the USA as they’re not relying on GPS. Instead, they’re engaging their
own positioning system called “BeiDou”. However it’ll take some time.
As for now, there are only 6 satellites online covering just a small part of the earth at once. To be globally available, at least 24 satellites are necessary. Each additional satellite improves the performance.
However China plans to set up 35 satellites until 2020, GPS will still be the leading positioning system. But who knows, maybe there will be new GPS tracking systems, which allows the usage of multiple positioning systems at once, allowing much more accurate positioning information and not less important: Faster positioning.
