Almost “free” speech…

Unbelievable but true. But it seems as if free speech in the USA gets limited
more and more. As if the USA wouldn’t have enough laws, there’s always
room for one more. This time it’s Middleborough, Massachusetts. A word
as common as other profanities you hear in public for various reasons.

Known as THE “F-Word” you’re no longer allowed to express it publicly in Middleborough by yelling it or doing the appropriate gesture using the middle finger. Disregarding that law will be fined with 20 US$ penalty. So now you better think twice about what you say! Regarding the fact, that almost every second word is the F-Word in America, this might be a very expensive law for those disregarding it.

From the aspect of free speech this is another setback. Sure ain’t profanities nice to be heard in public. But a country claiming the slogan “Land of the Free” for itself, this ain’t one of the laws underlining the slogan!

While we are at absurd laws:

In Berkeley, California, you’re no longer allowed to sit on the pedestrian. Usually it was forbidden to lay on the pedestrian. A way to reduce the number of publicly visible homeless and poor (and to cover the real poverty of the country?). As most of the homeless then decided to sit on the pedestrian, the corresponding law has been enforced by the additional parameter that laying AND sitting on the pedestrian is now prohibited by law and prosecuted if necessary.

Speaking of prohibitions: In new York (and most other U.S. States) it is forbidden to consume alcohol in the public. Even on New year’s Eve and the Independence day you’re not allowed to do so. How ironic in a state where the Liberty Statue is standing and trying to symbolize that you’re in the “Land of Freedom”

It seems that the human rights are more and more limited in the USA and it’s just a matter of time where you canot do anything there without violating a law here and there…
