F5 Networks acquired Nginx!
Nginx is known to many of website owners as Linux
servers often run nginx webserver as backend for
Websites. Originally released under BSD licence, nginx
can be used freely used by private persons.
The commercial version, released back in 2011 is called Nginx Plus and available to all commercially operated websites. Although the acquisition of Nginx is doubtful, there’s nothing known about how this will affect the licence model and if private persons will have to pay for Nginx webserver in the future.
It might be more likely that f5 basically wants to focus on Nginx Plus and the Naxsi plugin that allows Nginx to act as a fully featured software-based firewall and software security appliance.
f5 paid 670 million US$ for the acquisition and hopes to advance reach to customers running cloud-based websites and security services. Another competitor was Citrix but they drew back their offer as f5 has risen it’s offer to 670 million US$
