A plane parked in “nowhere”
You might wonder why this title of the post.
But in this case a plane is just parked in a spot
where you wouldn’t think of a plane to be at all!
In South Bali, a plane is in an odd place.
Nothing much is found about the plane at all except that it has been built in 1982 and was operated for 25 years. In 2007 it had it’s last flight, namely Flight Number “RI89” from MES (Soewondo Air Force Base (former International Airport Medan)) -> CGK (Soekarno–Hatta International Airport) on February 8th, 2007.
Since then the aircraft was newer operated again and speculations say that the plane has been involved in a non-fatal accident rendering the plane unusable. It has slided away from the runway into the grass and was so heavily damaged that a repair wouldn’t have been making sense. Fortunately there were no casualties reported.
So the operating Airline (Mandala Airlines) seems to have taken the plane out of operation and stationed it at its location today (maybe as part spender for similar aircrafts).
Since then the plane resides there and the engine intakes are boarded up. Some say that it has been done to hide that the plane is missing it’s turbine engines.
In 2016 a private investor has made plans to convert the hull into an aviatic cinema and restaurant but since then nothing has happened yet and so it is still a tourist magnet attracting some people to shoot their selfies with.
