It seems as if there are some rogue divers around who want to take Africa
offline. The Egyptian coastguard has captured 3 divers who were about to
cut the underwater line connection. As the repair of such a cable is often
very complex and expensive, the avoidance of such incidents is crucial!

As that said line is a very important connection node between Africa and Europe and also between Africa, Australia and Asia, the cutoff would have had a big impact on the internet access of Africa!

It is unknown what the real intention of the divers was but it is expected that either political or financial reasons with extortion were the real reason.

Two other underwater cables have also been damaged on March 22nd. SEACOM has demented that it could have to do with the same incident but didn’t exclude it either!
