Airport Berlin-Brandenburg… yet closed
Initially planned for opening in 2011, the schedule was set for June 2012,
now it seems as if the new airport BER won’t open before autumn 2013,
Flights that have already been planned for BER in 2012 have now to be
managed by Berlin-Tegel (TXL) and Schönefeld (SXF).
While most of the outer infrastructure is already done and up, the airport itsels seems to have still some lacks which habe risen the project cost by another 1.25 billion US$ (1.1 billion Euro).
And while Schönefeld is already over it’s PAX (7 million passengers/yr) and serving 7.110.000 passengers in 2011, which is, frankly said, a mild overcapacity, Berlin-Tegel is running at more then 25% over capacity. Built for a PAX of 12 million passengers, it served 16 million in 2011.
Time for Berlin to open the new BER airport as soon as possible. Otherwise, Berlin may run into trouble serving all flights in time…
