First of all you have to ask for yourself: &#8220;What do I want to charge and how much autonomy do I need.<\/p>\n<p>If you have the answer, then you&#8217;ll figure out also which battery pack you want to purchase. Keep in mind that good battery packs also have their price. For god&#8217;s sake and the health of you and your devices, don&#8217;t buy these cheap battery packs that promise 100.000mAh, 300.000mAh and even 500.000mAh capacity for just 20 dollars at the size of a battery pack that only provides one twentieth of the capacity. Most likely they do not provide the announced capacity and you also run risk of the cheap batteries inside to catch fire and that&#8217;s something we don&#8217;t want at all!<\/p>\n<p>Oh and one more thing: If you plan to fly make sure the battery pack is stowed away in your hand luggage as it may not be placed in your regular luggage due to safety regulations. There&#8217;s also a limit on capacity: The battery pack may not be larger than 100Wh capacity (100.000mWh). Some airlines even limit these packs down to 50Wh (50.000mWh). Ask at the check-In counter for their safety regulations and have them confirmed for your return flight as well! Especially for flights to the USA: Make sure your battery pack is fully charged so that border customs see that it isn&#8217;t a possibly dangerous device for flying! You don&#8217;t want your expensive gadget to be disposed at the security check for the sole reason of a discharged battery! This also applies for your electronic devices such as tablets, music players, cell phones and the like!<\/p>\n<p>The test is done with an iPhone 7 Plus, which has a battery size of 2840mAh. Before the charging process is started, the battery is drained to 10%. The &#8220;Charged-at&#8221; value is what you&#8217;ll see when the battery is all empty and the iPhone is stopping the charge process. The QI charge process is done with an iPhone X as it has similar capacity to the iPhone 7 Plus so the values are better comparable to each other<\/p>\n<h3>LiPo or LiIon, that&#8217;s the question&#8230;<\/h3>\n<p>While LiIon (Lithium-Ion) appears to be the more solid technology, the problem is that the charging technology needs to be very safe in order not to let the cells (mostly 18650 type) burst or take damage. LiPo (Lithium Polymer) is a bit easier to manage and the fact that you can form almost every shape with the polymer foil makes it first choice for battery packs that need to have a certain shape, thickness or the like.<\/p>\n<p>The case holding the cells can be filled efficiently unlike it&#8217;s LiIon brothers whose limitation is the round cells inside. They result in gaps between case and cells.<\/p>\n<p>The only reason why LiIon is still so frequently used is the optimal combination and alignment of the cells to produce a certain voltage. Each cell has 3.7V and thus you can build up any multiple of this voltage by putting 2,3,4&#8230; of them together in an array. With LiPo you can also build up any multiple of 3.7V but if one cell is smaller than the other one, then the smaller cell may suffer from faster weardown and thus the batterypack may loose capacity by time.<\/p>\n<h3>A Question of freshness<\/h3>\n<p>Some people complain about fresh battery packs not supplying the announced capacity&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s a normal process as a battery pack gains it&#8217;s full capacity when being fully discharged and charged three times. After that, the battery pack should be near announced capacity.<\/p>\n<p>So if you think your freshly purchased battery pack doesn&#8217;t deliver what it&#8217;s package promises, make sure your battery pack has been &#8220;initialized&#8221; as mentioned above.<\/p>\n<h3>A word about storage<\/h3>\n<p>Keep in mind that the cooler or hotter a battery pack is stored or operated, the degeneration process may accelerate and thus end up in less capacity provided or worse, malfunctions.<\/p>\n<p>If you need to store a battery pack for whatever reason, make sure that the cells are charged up to 90% and keep it in a cool place (15-25 Degrees) with a relative humidity of 35-80%.<\/p>\n<p>This way your battery pack can survive an annual storage with ease. Make sure to check the charge level after 6 monts or so to avoid complete dischargement of the cells. That&#8217;s every rechargeable battery&#8217;s death, especially LiPo or LiIon batteries may die quickly.<\/p>\n<h3>A word about safety<\/h3>\n<p>LiPo and LiIon batteries are sensitive devices. Short-circuit, Overloading, Overheating, puncturing or other heavy physical use of these may end up bad for you. The worst case might be that the battery inside may catch fire and do much more damage to your goods or to yourself if you carry the battery pack on you. So make sure the battery pack isn&#8217;t exposed to any such bad environmental impact. Also keep in mind that extinguishing a burning liPo or LiIon battery with water is a very bad idea as Lithium is highly reactive with water. Should the rare case come true and your battery pack catches fire, try to extinguish the fire with a fireproof cloth or sand. Thus it&#8217;s capacity isn&#8217;t very big, namely only 1100mAh, which would theoretically give an iPhone about 1\/3 of it&#8217;s juice back.<\/p>\n<p>Since it is rather small, the name is program and you&#8217;d better have a larger battery packed if you plan to be on tour for a longer time. This little battery is really only for\u00a0 &#8220;Emergency&#8221; charging.<\/p>\n<p>The haptics are okay, the case is made all plastic<\/p>\n<p>4 LEDs show you the actual charge level and with the press of the power button, you can start the charge process.<\/p>\n<p>With it&#8217;s &#8220;retractable&#8221; 1800mAh<\/h3>\n<p>This battery pack is from Philips and is now about 5 years old, yet delivers OK performance for what you got 5 years ago for your money. Although this pack isn&#8217;t that big, the capacity looks promising.<\/p>\n<p>The haptics are okay. Although Plastic dominates the whole case, the feeling that it isn&#8217;t all hollow inside makes it all worth.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s the only powerbank so far I&#8217;ve seen that has a Mini-USB port to have it charged.<\/p>\n<p>Alongside there&#8217;s a power supply that delivers 5V\/500mA with an USB-B port to connect the battery pack. And alongside you get a set of plugs to charge various older cell phone models. Was handy in the past but with the Upcoming of Micro-USB this sort of gets obsolete.<\/p>\n<p>If the batterypack appears to be non-charging or delivering way less capacity, there&#8217;s a reset pinhole to reset the charge logic and hopefully regaining the capacity announced. 2200mAh<\/h3>\n<p>The next battery pack was a gift from online Reseller Pearl. Similar products we found were at roughly 10 CHF so our expectations were not too high at all. But let&#8217;s have a look at the values that little battery has produced.<\/p>\n<p>As you can see, the battery does only deliver 90% of it&#8217;s designed capacity. It&#8217;s casing is held basic. Transparent tube around the inner case and two USB ports on top, micro-USB for charging, USB for discharging. Most likely there&#8217;s a single 18650 LiIon-battery inside&#8230;<br \/>\nThe lack of status LED or a key to test capacity can nhowever put you into challenge as you don&#8217;t know when this battery is out of juice. As the name suggests, this battery pack comes with a solar panel allwoing it to be recharged using sunlight.<\/p>\n<p>Although we personally think exposing a battery to direct sunlight (and the resulting heat!) is no good idea, the concept as such is ingenious. Without the need of a wall outlet you can recharge the battery pack with the help of mother nature. However recharing the battery pack with sunlight is very time-consuming. we didn&#8217;t test it but the manufacturer says it takes up to 20 hours of sunlight to have this battery pack at 100 percent again.<\/p>\n<p>As you can see, the battery does only deliver 59% of it&#8217;s designed capacity. It&#8217;s casing is held basic with a soft touch skin. Two USB-B ports on top, micro-USB for charging. Basic stuff yet remarkable that this low-capacity offers two USB-B ports for simultaneous charging. The brand Xtorm is well-kown in Europe and their mobile chargers offer good performance for a good price tag. While most other chargers in that price range either suffer from connectivity or from variety, Xtorm offers various types of mobile chargers for almost every occasion. So far, you&#8217;ve seen normal battery packs that all require you to have your charge cable with you in order to charge your mobile device. As QI wireless charging gets more popular with more devices supporting it (breakthrough for a standard was given when Apple finally joined the QI standard), the demand for such technology also rises!<\/p>\n<p>So what we&#8217;re looking at, is a battery pack that not only offers 2 USB ports for conventional charging but also a QI coil at the top of the housing to drop your QI-capable device on it. Although the charging power is limited to 1A as it is no High.Power coil, the delivered 5W are sufficient to charge also modern smartphones, like the iPhone X or Samsung&#8217;s S8 for an example.<\/p>\n<p>With a whopping 10&#8217;000mAh capacity at a rather small size, the question is: &#8220;May it deliver what it promises?&#8221; &#8211; That&#8217;s what we&#8217;re going to find out now. Especially the price tag of only 12 to 16 CHF might let you raise your eyebrows.<\/p>\n<p>Okay, the haptics may feel cheap as the leather imitation is actually moded plastic but hey, you can&#8217;t ask for a gold bar and only pay the price of a pebble. The design however looks nice and gives it a modern look.<\/p>\n<p>The downside is that the input port seems not to take more than 1A charging power, making recharging of this battery pack a patience challenge. So better plug that buddy in before you go to bed and let it charge overnight.<\/p>\n<p>The mobile battery pack can be ordered either via Wish but if you search for the brand (FDGAO) you will be able to find it in Stores selling on Amazon Marketplace and other distribution channels, at higher prices, naturally! So if you&#8217;re willing to take the risk, go for it via Wish and order it directly from the supplier (which is located, surprise! surprise!, in Shenzhen, China). Wish has however a good customer protection service so it is no total risk but as you know customs might hold back deliveries if they obviously violate local safety regulations.<\/p>\n<p>We personally like the bright LED percentage display and the &#8220;breathing&#8221; QI symbol when charging wirelessly. As we don&#8217;t have any Android devices supporting QuickCharge, we cannot verify this statement nor can we tell how these devices get pumped up so fast.<\/p>\n<p>Anyhow, testing with iDevices, we get remarkable values and you get what you paid for. The JP20 from them has arrived at our desk and wants to be checked thoroughly.<\/p>\n<p>Unpacking that beast you clearly notice it&#8217;s large dimensions and weight. Stuffing 8 LiIon cells into that case is a challenging task but worked well.<\/p>\n<p>With 2 USB-B Ports that deliver a 3.4A combined power output max. the power bank may charge a tablet computer and a cell phone at the same time. The specialty is that it also offers a 9V\/1A output for cameras so you can also charge them if your camera runs out of power.<\/p>\n<p>The sky-blue display itself shows the accurate charge state. However our sample seems to have a problem, charging higher than 97%. At 97% the charging process gets interrupted repeatedly and the display starts flashing. The first product we got from them leaves a good impression and seems to deliver solid value for the buck. Although the similarity to other products is given, this powerbank however is being covered by the Quality assurance of AData. So if there&#8217;s a problem with the product, you don&#8217;t have to get in touch with an unknown company and haggle with the customer care service 8if existent!) to get a replacement.<\/p>\n<p>So what do we have here? It&#8217;s just basic features. 2 USB B ports offering together 2.1A output power or 2.1A singe port power thus allowing tablet computers to be charged as well. Also a bright LED torch is built-in so you don&#8217;t have to search for the ports in complete darkness. The capacity display is backlit in blue so you can read it in complete darkness as well. The display backlight goes off also when charging so that beast may reside on your nightstand for charging. However with a charge time of 33 hours it takes more than a day to have it fully recharged. WTF! Come on, even bigger battery packs can charge a lot faster at same voltage\/power and with bigger capacity. So what&#8217;s going wrong here? Maybe the integrated charging logic board is not optimized. However I&#8217;ll take further investigation into this and hopefully find out what makes the recharge process so sluggish.<\/p>\n<p>Also the efficiency is, frankly said, terrible. 40% isn&#8217;t something that a battery pack schould end up with. This appears to be a severe design flaw in the charging logic or the logic board itself. But you certainly don&#8217;t want to carry it in your jacket&#8217;s pocket. With a total power output of 4A (20W!) this beast can feed two tablet computers or 3 cell phones with ease. The IQ Power technology allows intelligent power distribution. So when you attach 2 cell phones and one tablet computer to it, the tablet computer gets 2A while the cell phones get 1A each. Clevery done and a real deal if you have multiple devices to be charged at once. A single port is however fed with 2A maximum although the output power is designed for 4A. Anyhow. The black glossy is a real magnet for dist and fingerprints which might let the battery pack look smudgy soon if you don&#8217;t carry around a microfibre cloth with you.<\/p>\n<p>The built-in torch is not that bright but serves it&#8217;s task. Devices capable of Quick Charge with higher currents (the iPhone 7 \/ iPad Pro Gen1 \/ iPhoneX are such phones btw.) will profit from a much quicker charge process.<\/p>\n<p>The USB-C port will also detect if it&#8217;s used for charging. The rather big battery pack is housing a classic C-Type socket for the so-called Euro plug. Besides that there are also 2 USB ports to add some more juice to your mobile devices if needed.<\/p>\n<p>What is really astounding, is the extremely good notebook charge efficiency. With a 111% efficiency it&#8217;s interesting to see that more power is issued than taken. we did the test multiple times to assure that there&#8217;s no measurement error and we ended up with the same results over and over again. we only have one explanation: Either our 230V measurement device to determine the power draw from the outlet is measuring less than real or the AC outlet of the powerbank is producing odd results.<\/p>\n<p>The haptics of this powerbank, well, the black plastic makes it odd to handle and yells out cheapness.<\/p>\n<p>Also we noticed that activating the AC outlet brings up coil whining. Seems normal as there&#8217;s a transformation from 19V to 230V ongoing. As the AC outlet is fixed to 230V keep in mind not to plug in devices that require 115VAC!<\/p>\n<p>we noticed a rather worrying heat dissipation next to the power outlet. The caveat with this product however is that if it breaks then refunding\/warranty claim may become a challenge.<\/p>\n<p>So you might want to check first if you&#8217;re good to go with this product or if you want to have the safety of warranty in case the battery pack ceases function!<\/p>\n<p>The XTorm AL380 was disappointing as the capacity put in was missed by far. It is the battery pack with the worst efficiency in this test and thus cannot get a big recommendation from us although the product still ranked &#8220;average&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>In the end it&#8217;s up to all of you who wants to spend what amount on what product and what your preferences are. Some products have an excellent capacity\/efficiecy factor.<\/p>\n<p>So maybe this table has given you a good overview on what to choose and what not.<\/p>\n<p>But dash it all&#8230; all these products have their right to exists at any point and luckily all these products are safe to use.<br \/>\nNone of the products have shown any sign of blowup (LiPo batteries do that) or did explode and\/r start burning (LiIon batteries tend to do that so a very good security measurement at voltage\/charge monitoring is necessary to maintain the 18650 cells inside!).<\/p>\n<p>Usually LiIon-batteries are way more expensive as they need a more complex security measurement when they get charged or discarged and\/or short-circuited!<\/p>\n<p>We haven&#8217;t however tested short-circuitry proof of the products as we don&#8217;t want to break them or start a fire in our home.
