{"id":1723,"date":"2011-10-17T10:55:42","date_gmt":"2011-10-17T08:55:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.netspark.de\/?p=1723"},"modified":"2020-03-12T03:31:25","modified_gmt":"2020-03-12T02:31:25","slug":"munich-to-be-2-next-year-in-the-top500-list","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.netspark.de\/?p=1723","title":{"rendered":"Munich to be #2 next year in the Top500 list?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today I have read an article on c&#8217;t that the Leibniz Rechenzentrum\u00a0 in Munich is about to<br \/>\nbuild up a new building that shall house a new 3 PFlops\/s supercomputer that is being<br \/>\nbuilt up with 14&#8217;112 SandyBridge-EP processors providing 112.896 cores for calculation.<br \/>\nIf it goes online next year, it could be #2 on the Top500 list. The <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.netspark.de\/?p=150\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">leader<\/a> does 8 PFlops\/s.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->The new supercomputer shall be part of the european PRACE project. However the Free state of Bavaria has to fork over a whopping 84 million euros to make the dream of being the second on the Top500 list come true.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand I wonder what other supercomputers that beat the actual #2 (2.5 PFlops\/s) are currently built up. I suppose, the USA are already doing a similar project that can be faster than SuperMUC, as the new supercomputer will be called.
