Winamp lives… AGAIN!

In 2013 Winamp was stuck on it’s last version 5.666 and
hasn’t been developed on since then. But on last friday
the developers have reported that Winamp 5.8 has hit
the light and is released now. And that’s just the start…

The Winamp team has ideas to improve the player to modern OS and fully integrate it into the new environments.

Although Winamp has lost popularity agains MPC-HC, VLC & Co. it has been the 1st choice player for users that have a large MP3 archive with over 20.000 files. While other players regularly crashed when processing large playlists, Winamp rarely had problems processing even playlists with over 100.000 entries.

The player has been my primary choice as well, as I liked the slim, lightweight design of Winamp packing all that functionality in a 2.9MB small binary.

Now MPC-HC serves a good service but also I have not used MP3 for a prolonged time extensively…

But maybe it’s time to blow off the dust off my old MP3 HDDs and give those music files another spin… ;)

For those who want to re-live the era of MP3 and their glory in playback and visualization, may download the file from Winamp directly
