39th TOP500 list released

The newest Top500 list is released and again a supercomputer in the USA
is dominating the list again after the supercomputer in Japan has marked
a new record last year and dominating the list with a total computing
power of 10.1 PFlops/s. Let’s get a sneak peek on the new hell machine.

Located in Knoxville, Tennessee, the Energys Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory’s Sequoia defines a new record in computing power. 98’304 CPUs and a total of 1,572,864 cores offer a total computing power of 16.32 petaflop/s on the Linpack benchmark. That’s almost double as fast as the K computer located at RIKEN Advanced Institute for Computational Science (AICS), Japan.

Sequoia in Knoxville, Tennessee – The world’s fastest supercomputer in 06/2012
(I bet this computer’s very loud – watch the people wearing earmuffs!)

Interesting fact is that the Sequoia is only using approx 8 MW.

Backed by 1.5 PB of total RAM(!) this machine should be able to do scientific calculations faster than ever before. Who knows. maybe this computer will crunch the tremendous amount of data being gnerated at CERN when the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is again being used for the search of the Boson-Higgins Particle which is said to be the Particle all science of material and elements is relied on.

So the Computer in the Leibniz Rechenzentrum in Munich is #4 in the world and lost it’s bronze status.

Although we have so much calculation power in the world, it’s still not yet used to research on diseases like genetic defects and cancer. How about using these machines in projects like SETI@HOME a Project council that hosts projects like Rosetta@home or Superlink@Technion.

Maybe you’d like to get some information about this using the BOINC Project homepage.
