AMD reaching for Ultrabooks

2019 was already challenging for Intel when AMD
announced the 3rd Gen Threadripper series. Intel
hoped that this would have been the only attack
from AMD. But AMD shifts the next gear…

AMD just announced the Ryzen 4000 series which is the Ryzen 3rd Gen series but for mobile devices on the CES 2020. Especially the notebook and Ultra notebook series is still a domian of Intel. But now AMD also tries to take a bite off Intel’s cake.

And if we have a look at the numbers, this could be a successful start for AMD:

CPU Cores/Threads Base clock/Boost Cache

GPU Cores

GPU clock TDP
Ryzen 7 4800U 8/16  1,8/4,2 GHz 12 MB 8 1750 MHz 15 W*
Ryzen 7 4700U 8/8  1,8/4,1 GHz 12 MB 7 1600 MHz 15 W*
Ryzen 5 4600U 6/12  2,1/4,0 GHz 11 MB 6 1500 MHz 15 W*
Ryzen 5 4500U 6/6  2,3/4,0 GHz 11 MB 6 1500 MHz 15 W*
Ryzen 3 4300U 4/4  2,7/3,7 GHz 6 MB 5 1400 MHz 15 W*
* OEM builders can setup a variable TDP of 12 to 25 watts

This looks quite promising as the top line CPU will provide 8 cores / 16 threads at only 15 watts TDP! With a base clock of 1.8GHz the processor even clocks faster than the i7-1065G7 which is also a Ultra-low-Power CPU designed for ultraportable devices. The i7-1065G7 comes with 6 cores / 12 threads and 8 MB Cache. However the base clock is 1.3GHz and the Uncore Boost is capped at 3.9GHz. Main problem for Intel is again the fact that they only fab at 10nm while AMD is fabbing at 7nm for quite some time. This allows AMD to reach a good boost in CPU power per watt against Intel.

But not only the CPU part has advantages over the Intel processor. Also the Radeon IGPU comes with quite high clocking and enough cores to allow some gaming on the Ultrabook without the need to switch down to HD-ready or even below in order to get moderate frame rates above 30fps. As a comparison, the Iris Plus IGPU of Intel comes with a target clocking of 1100MHz which is far away from what AMD offers. No wonder that AMD will achieve moderate frame rates even in FullHD resolution.

It seems as if AMD has done it right this time and Intel will have to rethink their strategy. AMD is also setting a new milestone in mobile gaming at moderate power consumption (CPU takes about 50 Watts at maximum)

Their H series also sets new records in mobile gaming when it comes to IGPU-based notebooks where content creation is the main aspect. Even here, customers don’t have to spare on gaming as the 4800H, despite it’s significantly higher base clocking, still provides 7 GPU cores to allow good frame rates in Full-HD gaming.

CPU Cores/Threads Base clock/Boost Cache

GPU Cores

GPU clock TDP
Ryzen 7 4800H 8/16  2,9/4,2 GHz 12 MB 7 1600 MHz 45 W*
Ryzen 5 4600H 6/12  3,0/4,0 GHz 11 MB 6 1500 MHz 45 W*
* OEM builders can setup a variable TDP of 35 to 45 watts

Of course you can’t set up your game to maximum graphics details but hey, with moderate settings fluid gaming without the need of a dedicated GPU is possible and this in general means extended battery run times.

Again this should be the long-awaited wake-up call for Intel to stop dreaming of being the unbeaten number one on the CPU market. AMD has shuffled the cards anew and according to that this also could mean lower CPU stock prices in the Intel camp.

As AMD also is further developing their Navi GPU, we can also expect some new interesting graphics cards that will show NVidia thet their fat years are counted as well. The RTX 2080 Super is nothing else but moderate refurb of the 1080 series with the Raytracing add-on. But the called price of over 1200 US$ per card is just ridiculous. The 2080 Super doesn’t even have the Wow-effect of the Titan cards that have been released in the past were such high prices would have been accepted.

Of course all these presentation slides look nice but let’s wait for the first real tests where notebooks with mentioned CPUs are tested against Intel-based notebooks.
