Intel to fight 3rd gen Ryzen 9

Intel seems to fear the next-gen Ryzen series so
that they bring a new CPU lineup with higher
clock speeds. Also the TDP has been raised for some
types in order to achieve new top clock speeds.

But is a raise of the TDP enough to face the new Ryzen 9 processors from AMD? Intel was also forced to lower the prices on some processors in order to stay competetive with AMD as they released their 3rd gen Ryzen processors based on the Zen2+ architecture.

While AMD already fabs in 7nm, Intel is still stuck with 14nm and barely bringing processors fabbed at 10nm++ (whereas the ++ means that it’s not 10nm but rather a bit bigger (12 to 14nm)).

However this is the new CPU lineup from Intel:

CPU Cores / Threads Base clock Uncore Turbo All-Core Turbo TDP
Core i9-10900K 10 / 20 3,7 GHz 5,3 GHz 4,8 GHz 125 W
Core i9-10900 10 / 20 2,8 GHz 5,1 GHz 4,5 GHz 65 W
Core i7-10700K 8 / 16 3,8 GHz 5,1 GHz 4,7 GHz 125 W
Core i7-10700 8 / 16 2,9 GHz 4,8 GHz 4,6 GHz 65 W
Core i5-10600K 6 / 12 4,1 GHz 4,8 GHz 4,5 GHz 125 W
Core i5-10600 6 / 12 3,3 GHz 4,8 GHz 4,4 GHz 65 W
Core i5-10500 6 / 12 3,1 GHz 4,5 GHz 4,2 GHz 65 W
Core i5-10400 6 / 12 2,9 GHz 4,3 GHz 4,0 GHz 65 W
Core i3-10320 4 / 8 3,8 GHz 4,6 GHz 4,4 GHz 65 W
Core i3-10300 4 / 8 3,7 GHz 4,4 GHz 4,2 GHz 65 W
Core i3-10100 4 / 8 3,6 GHz 4,3 GHz 4,1 GHz 65 W

Only the K-variants do have the elevated TDP and thus can achieve higher base/Uncore turbo clocks while the non-K-variants will be limited due to their significantly lower TDP. Honestly we think, the I9-10900 will run into TDP-based throttling as the All-core turbo clocks are quite high compared to the i9-10900K. However all processors now have access to the Hyperthreading technology. This means, even the smaller processors might benefit from Hyperthreading and offer good performance for a fair price.

But tests in the future might show how hood or bad the new lineup will perform against the Ryzen 3rd-gen processors from AMD.

And while Intel has now shown their lineup as a counterstrike to AMD’s Ryzen 3xxx processors, AMD will be unveiling their Ryzen 4xxx lineup tailored for mobile gaming in notebooks at the CES. Another Intel domain AMD is now trying to invade.
