When the TouchBar gets adult…

And NO we’re not talking about an Apple product
today eventhough Apple had some updates on their
MacBook Pro lineup (which relates to the newest
intel CPU). Today this is all about ASUS!

Yes, ASUS is well-known for their mainboards but for some years now ASUS is also manufacturing great notebooks as well. The ZenBook series is the answer from ASUS to the Apple MacBook Pro. However you don’t have to shell out as much money as you would have to  to obtain an equally-equipped MBP.

Okay, first, let’s gaze on this new beau which comes in two sizes: 14 and 15 inches screen size. The 15-inch model however is the Pro model and has better specs. Images are from the pro model, but the normal Zenbook Duo almost looks the same:

Elegant, sleek design with a classy appearance…

…meets a very big second screen, the ScreenPad 2.0…

…and still isn’t too thick or heavy for an 8core i9-9980HK…

…while housing a GeForce RTX 2060 to provide good graphics performance!

This is a real gem, we can tell you. And the tech specs look promising as well:

  • 15.6″ 4K (3840×2160) OLED main display with 10-finger Multi-gesture Touchscreen
  • 14.0″ 4K (3840×1100) LCD ScreenPad with 10-finger Multi-gesture Touchscreen
  • Intel Core-i9 9980HK with 8 cores / 16 threads and a core boost of 5 GHz!
  • GeForce RTX 2060 with 6144MB GDDR6 dedicated GPU-Memory
  • Intel UHD Iris Pro 620 integrated GPU
  • Ready for Optimus technology

  • Weight: 2514g (230W AC Power supply: 280g)
  • Estimated MSRP: 2499 US$ upon launch in Q3 2019

Indeed impressive specs. The RTX 2060 is indeed necessary to fire 2 screens at 4K resolution albeit the ScreenPad has only half the height of the main screen.

However the overall performance should make this notebook also ready for some serious gaming what would also mean that this is not just another workstation luxury notebook but rather a full-sized moltimedia notebook with ambition for more then just being plain ordinary.

It’s smaller version, the Asus Zenbook UX481 does not have the “Pro” in its name but also is costing way less. However you have to miss some performance.

The following picture from Notebookcheck shows the dimensions between the two models well:

  • 14.0″ FHD (1920×1080) LCD main display
  • 12.6″ FHD (1920×550) LCD ScreenPad with 10-finger Multi-gesture Touchscreen
  • Intel Core-i7 I7-8565U 4cores / 8 threads – core Boost up to 4.6GHz
  • GeForce MX 250 with 2048MB GDDR5 dedicated GPU-Memory
  • Intel UHD Iris Pro 620 integrated GPU
  • Ready for Optimus technology
  • Up to 16GB of LPDDR3 2133MHz memory (2 banks)
  • 1TB PCIe x4 SSD or 256GB, 512GB PCIe x2 SSD
  • 79key 15mm Chicklet keyboard
  • 3 feature keys
  • 1 power key
  • Virtual 10-keypad and TouchPad with 2 separate buttons
  • Intel WiFi6 (802.11ax Gbit+ WLAN)
  • Bluetooth 5.0
  • 720p Infrared webcam ready for Windows Hello
  • Harman&Kardon sound system with Cortana-compatible microphone
  • 1x microSD Card slot up to 512GB capacity
  • 1x USB C (USB3.1 Gen2)
  • 1x USB A (USB3.1 Gen2)
  • 1x USB A (USB3.1 Gen1)
  • 1x HDMI 2.0 with HDCP 2.4 capability
  • 1x AUX connector for additional Ports or docking station
  • 1x Audio Jack (combined Line-Out/Line-In/SPDIF)
  • 1x 19.0V Power connector (90W max. power consumption)
  • 70Wh 4-cell LiIon battery (non-changeable)
  • Dimensions: 323 x 223 x 19 mm
  • Weight: 1862g (90W AC Power supply: 196g)
  • Estimated MSRP: 999 US$ upon launch in Q3 2019

The smaller version is rather for working than for serious gaming. The much slimmer design and the lighter body indeed tell you that, let alone the less-powerful Geforce MX 250. The positive aspect is that you have to shell out just a mere 1000 bucks. That’s okay for what you get!

Both notebooks look great so let’s see how they perform in everyday enviroment when they are released in Q3 2019.
