CES 2019: Gaming Notebooks

The CES has opened it’s gates and all major brands are
presenting their newest products. So have Lenovo, LG
and MSI shown their newest 17-inch-notebooks that
are also capable of high-quality gaming.

Let’s start with LG and their really interesting 17-inch slim and lightweight notebook:

The LG gram 2019:

The LG gram 17-inch laptop – big and lightweight!

The most astonishing fact of the LG Gram 17 is that it just weighs 1.34 kg which is not much for a notebook this size.

You get a gen8-i7 processor (Intel® Core™ i7-8565U 1.80GHz / 4.60GHz) with integrated GPU unit (Intel® UHD Graphics 620)

The display features 2560×1600 display resolution which seems state-of-the-art today as 3K displays become modern these days,

512GB m2-SSD and 16GB RAM are enough for mobile computing and office work and will also allow more than that.

Of course this ain’t a gaming notebook for heavy-GPU-impacting games but the casual gamer will be able to play less-complex games on it with no problems here.

We also see a fingerprint sensor in the top right corner of the numberpad which is designed for usage in larger companies for their workers. But also private persons might like this feature of logging into their account in Windows 10 Home (the basic OS that comes with the LG gram 17)

Although the display bezels are very slim, there’s still a HD webcam available to allow video conferences if necessary. So no external webcam has to be connected.

Network-wise we get a 10/100 Mbit LAN connector via USB-C (why no gigabit?) and when connecting via Wireless, you get 802.11ac with a 2×2 antenna configuration that allows speeds up to theoretically 866 Mbit/s

Apart from that you get one USB-C port and 3 USB-A-3.1 ports to have your external devices connected to the notebook.

To transfer data from mobile devices, this notebook can take microSDXC cards up to 512GB.

LG claims battery runtimes up to 19.5 hours with the integrated 72Wh 4-cell LiIon battery. However if the system will receive heavy load, the runtime may decrease dramatically as the processor might ask for a lot of power to reach the 4.6GHz turbo speed.

apart from the 17 inch model, there will be also a 15,14 and 13 inch model available. they will most likely differ in display and battery configuration as the housing of the components will have less space available the smaller the notebook gets.

Tests on the usual notebook testing sites will probably reveal all the necessary data later. LG states that the new models will be available from the end of January 2019.

On to the Lenovo Legion Y740:

The Lenovo Legion Y740 – flat and colorful gamer!

The Lenovo Legion Y740 will be Lenovo’s answer to ASUSs and MSIs gaming notebooks. Although the notebook is rather flat compared to the high-end gamer notebooks from ASUS and MSI, Lenovo still managed to pack a RTX 2080 MaxQ into the small housing. the i7-8750H as the topmost CPU configuration will allow fast CPU-loading applications.

32GB of RAM will be sufficient to run even very memory-lasting applications up to video cutting.

A HDD can be either 512GB SSD using m2 slot or a 2TB classic HDD. With being ready for Intel Optane, there’s also room for high-speed data transfer.

The display itself is a classic FHD display with 144Hz GSYNC technology which is astounding, Dolby Vision HDR400 adds a brighter screen experience (500nits) to the basket!

So expect smooth gaming in a slim form-factor at just 2.2kg weight!

But with a price of roughly 2’000 US$ this isn’t ceap.

A smaller version will be available as well but will only house a RTX 2060 GPU instead, won’t be ready for Intel Optane but then features a numberpad. (We wonder why the 17-inch model doesn’t have this!)

On to MSI and their new lineup:

MSI GL73:

If you see a Similarity to ASUS’ Chimera (G703GX), you’re right!

The GL73 is the cheapest version to enter RTX gaming. A RTX 2060 is the GPU and the rest is standard: Core i5 or i7 of the 8th gen. Up to 32GB RAM using two banks is possible. additionally you have one USB-C and 3 USB-A Gen3.1 connectors. Additionally you have GBit LAN, HDMI and MiniDP connectors for external monitors.

MSI GS75 Stealth:

The GS75 is the lightweight slim Power Machine.

If you prefer a fast gaming notebook that isn’t a thick heavy behemoth, then this one is for you! It can hold a RTX 2080 MaxQ and the commonly known I7-8750H as processor which gives the notebook the necessary power to run the even most GPU-torturing games.

Connectivity is limited due to the slim body design but you still have these: 1xHDMI2.0,  3xUSB-A, 1xUSB-C, 1xUSB-C/Thunderbolt/MicroDP, 1xGBit LAN. That’s almost the same, the other models have.

Inside you can have up to 32GB RAM and 3xSSD. That allows quite fast SSD-RAID setups for even faster transfer speeds of disk data.

With only 2.25kg of weight it is also a breeze to carry around compared to the GT75 which we will see later on.

Oh, one more thing: The display is GSync 144Hz FullHD. Nice!

MSI GE75 Raider:

Gimme more! – RTX 2080 for example!

You seek out for a classic DTR notebook with full GPU power? Then the GE75 might be your choice. It comes with all the features of the Stealth series, however you only have two M2 bays. And instead of 3 USB3.1 connectors, one of them is just USB3.0 but even that one comes still with 5Gbit transfer speed, enogh for today’s external drives, even SSDs! The Stealth has just a single-color keyboard illumination, where the Raider has a per-key RGB illumination. Fancy stuff!

There is no word lost about this one’s weight though but you can expect it around the 3kg range (probably 2.9kg)

And now, ladies and gentlemen, let’s see the behemoth of them all:

MSI GT75 Titan:

Sturdy but clunky design. But maximum power has it’s toll!

If size and weight don’t matter, then the Titan might be the choice o’yours!

It’s the only known DTR notebook that sports a 4K UHD display, paired with a RTX 2080 GPU and 64GB of RAM. the CPU can be a Core-i9 8950HK and is the topmost configuration in the complete MSI lineup to date. the audio panel is completed with 3 connectors for Mic, Headphone and SPDIF, you will find 1xUSB-C and 5xUSB-A connectors there.

For external displays there’s the classic HDMI, MiniDP and the Thunderbolt connector. Network-wise you can expect a 10GbE connector(!) and 802.11ac WLAN with a 3×3 setup, allowing up to 1300Mbit/s.

Allk that demands for a weight of 4.5kg and a 330W power supply that also adds another kg to the package. YIKES!

But the newly designed 11pipe cooling solution allows fastest clocks while the fans won’t spin up too high and get annoying.

So if you need the fastest DTR available to date, then this one’s for you! But have at least 5000 US$ in your pocet because this is the MSRP for the  GT75!

Let’s see how ASUS is going to respond to these. Until now there was no press release or CES message from ASUSif they update their ASUS ROG lineup! But it’s most likely that they will also release new DTRs with RTX graphics.

Alienware Area51m

Dell’s gaming section has brought up another type of DTR. Their newest addition goes in the direction of Desktop power and unlike the other gaming notebooks featured in this article, the Alienware Area51m will hold up to an Intel i9-9900K desktop processor that will be overclockable up to 5GHz. The GPU however will be an RTX 2080 notebook GPU (but replaceable!). Dell has made specially customized GPU modules for the Area51m that will probably allow the swapping/upgrading of the GPU afterwards.

The silhouette looks futuristic!

The hinge type looks familiar to the ones used by ASUS, Clevo and Lenovo. The display lid is a bit shifted to thefront to allow better placement of the heat exhaust grilles and placement of the back connector panel.

While MSI goes for 4K in it’s new Titan models, Alienware will stick to FullHD but then offer a 144Hz option with GSync. Or you take the standard panel with just 60Hz refresh rate.

Connection-wise this DTR comes with up to 5 USB connectors, 2 of them being USB-C, 1 MiniDP, 1 HDMI, 1 E-GPU-Port (for those who think, the RTX 2080 still needs some support!) and the classic headphone jacks.

Clear lines at the front make the design appealing…

The keyboard is gamer-oriented and ofers 6 programmable keys to the left, a standard keyboard layout and a numpad. All keys are full-sized so it’s the perfect DTR.

The weight is 3.8kg and thus a bit lighter than the MSI Titan. Dell uses magnesium alloy components for the construction to make the housing light yet durable.

The power demand however asks for a 180W and 330W power supply to be connected at he same time if you want to unleash the full potential.

The battery inside might give in rather quick as the components are usually found in a standard Gaming Desktop PC.

One thing that all notebooks shown today have in common: They have no optical drive anymore.

So if you still play games that require a CD or DVD to be inserted, you might want to buy an external drive!
