The future is near: LCD contact lens!

Have irisses with pictures long been a dream vision in movies, it now
seems that this is no longer Science-Fiction. The Centre of Microsystems has
developed a contact lens with a flexible LC display that is capable of display-
ing images. However the image is only viewable forothers, not the wearer.

So why is the lens still not fully practicable?

The reason is that the wearer is still seeing a blurry image as the focus is not adjustable yet. But practical appliances might be a brightnes controlling LCD that is adjusting brightness by darkening or brightening the whole lens. This might help people with eye problems (such as a defective iris) to still be able to see normally without trouble to the retina and the like.

At Washington university, plans like these have also been followed, however based on LED which at that time were not small enough to lead into usable results.

The LCD allows much finer structures and thus more capabilities.

However it’ll be still a long way until contact lenses, say with integrated Augmented reality, will become true. But who knows who will do the first step to create such lenses that you’ll get a view like the “Terminator”…
