Well… Apple has named it’s next OS

Seems that the newest OS of Apple will be called “Mountain Lion”. After “Snow lepard” it’s a
logic sequence. Seems Apple has been into felines recently if you look at the naming of all
OSX versions. But hey, it’s only creative I think, especially when you look up the
codenames for Windows: XP=Whistler, Vista=Longhorn, Seven=Vienna.

So has Win 95 been Chicago, and 98 been Memphis, ME been Georgia, so have 2000, XP and Vista been named by anything but city names. Only Seven has picked up the path again where Windows ME has stopped the path.

yet, the mountain lion sleeps...

Okay back to the roots of this blog. So Apple brings out the shiny new OS approximately at the end of Q2 2012. A hundred new functions are enclosed with the new OS. Amongst these are also Gatekeeper, a program that will allow the user to decide, whether to install Apps from all kind of sources, only Apple-Source and from developers with a personal ID and only from Apple-Source.

Seems as if Apple wants to either allow some breakout of the strict monopolistic AppStore-scheme and allow external sources as well. And on the other hand they’re going to stop spreading of malware. I suppose that Apple will set the security strength to “Apple-AppStore source only” by default.

However there’s a downside also. Some types of Apple hardware are no öonger supported such as:

End-2006 iMacs (iMac5,1, iMac5,2, iMac6,1)
All MacBooks before the Unibody-Design, except variants with NVIDIA GeForce 9400M, aka MacBook5,2 (MacBook2,1, MacBook3,1, MacBook4,1)
MacBook Pros before June 2007 (MacBookPro2,1, MacBookPro2,2)
the initial MacBook Air (MacBookAir1,1)
Mid-2007 Mac mini (Macmini2,1)
The Original Mac Pro und 8-core 2007 refresh (MacPro1,1, MacPro2,1)
End-2006 und Begin-2008 Xserves (Xserve1,1, Xserve2,1)
So if you’re an owner of one of these devices, you’re out of luck as Apple says that these machines don’t have the capacity to run Mountain Lion.
However I am shocked about the line where the MacPro with 8core should not have enough power to runOSX 10.8?! What the heck is Apple doing or pushing into the OS? Hey, even Windows Seven can be run on a stinking netbook which has by far LESS power than a first-generation MacBook Air!
So Apple can’t lure to Microsoft and say: “Hey, we got a one-size-fits-all OS” – They lock out users also with their update policy. Forcing users to buy a new machine just for OSX 10.8? I don’t think, many users will like this idea. Although I find the MacBook Air 13 sexy, I hate the idea that Apple might say to me that the new purchased hardware might not be supported by OSX 10.9 later on.
You see, that’s where I direct my minds to a shiny Samsung Series 9 15″ ultrabook where there’s lots of processor power to run Windows Seven smoothly and even Windows 8 (if I will ever get comfy with the idea of using “Tiles” instead of icons).
Although I really like my iPhone from Apple and even find their computers sexy and running stable, there ARE things that still hinder me investing in an Apple computer in the near future yet!
Although Apple users may hate me for this citation, it still hits the nail’s head:
“Apple really knows how to tie users to them and to squeeze them like a citron”
And where one yould think, Apple’s sweeter than Microsoft… well, think again. Windows Seven is capable running on a wide variety of hardware (although you may want to update your hardware very cost-intensive depending of what you take…) where MacOSX seems to be more picky. And where Windows seems rather expensive compared to MacOSX, Apple makes money back of this deficit to switch the user into buying new hardware that may fit the new OS. So Apple ain’t much better than Intel/Microsoft. But they have the better marketing and more sexy machines. Ever been to an Apple Store? No? Then do it and have a look at the iMac and MacBook Pro. They’re sexy hardware, no questions asked!
Well… time to get back into reality and do some stuff on my computer except blog writing ;)
Have a nice sunday!
