Android Tablet gone big

Archos is known for many multimedia devices and
low-budget tablet computers. This time Archos has
released a new superlative tablet for entertainment
purpose: The Archos Play Tab.

The special feature is it’s gigantic 21.5 inch display that has the purpose to serve media and game content on a big screen while still being portable. The display is FullHD which is sufficient.

Archos itself says that the display is covered by a laminated and tempered glass. It is not known, however, if the 6mm thickness is accurate as a glass panel of this size would heavily impact on the weight. Yet noone would ever consider holding the tab for a prolonged time.

The concept is not new but the fact that it is a mobile device, is!

Archos wants to create a medium that the whole family can use for gaming and entertainment. Archos’ slogan fits in well with this tablet.

So what about the tech specs of this oversized mobile device?

  • 21.5 inch display with 1920×1080 display resolution (FullHD)
  • 3.7V 10000mAh display serving 7.4V current at 5000mAh
  • Octa-core APU (not identified more detailed)
  • 32GB eMMC memory
  • 3GB RAM
  • Android 9 Foot (special variant of Android 9 Pie)
  • Weight is not determined yet
  • No info about cameras
  • No info about external ports or card slots
  • Price about 300US$ / 250€

We expect a weight of over 1kg due to the heavy thick glass the display is protected with. Since the battery has to stem 7.4V with 5000mAh, the runtime without connection to the wall outlet might not be long. We expect a runtime of 2 hours upon average usage and 1 hour upon heavy usage.

Although runtime and weight seem to be poor, the main focus is that the tablet will mostly serve as a virtual game board that is hooked to a power brick. As the power draw will most likely exceed 2.1A we expect the power brick to be a proprietary solution or (if Archos is doing us good) an USB-C connector that allows up to 100W power delivery.

There’s no pinned release date yet but it’ll be available this year though.

The price seems right so this might become a good mobile and multi-versatile entertainment center for the family that is not tied down to just vertical alignment (like a TV).
