Why Electronic Arts is worse than Google!

Battlefield 3 has hit the stores and since yesterday you can activate your
purchased game online. Activate it? Yes, you read right, also EA has started
the crap with online activation à la Ubisoft & Co. – So playing Battlefield 3
without a working activation Server and Origin? Well… T. s.!

But why is Origin (EA’s answer on Steam) worse than Google? Right question!

While Steam allows you to deactivate any statistics and information gathering about you or your machine, the EULA of EA’s Origin is more than a slap in the face. Within the EULA EA reserves the right to collect the following (sensitive ) information about you:

  • Your hardware and the ID’s of the single components
  • History paths of the web browser
  • IP, MAC and ID of your network card (possibly also the router?)
  • Gender, Age, Address, Location and zip code
  • Installed hard- and software
  • User stats
  • Achievements
  • Get administrative rights and bypass UAC

As you can see, that’s pretty much information they gather about you and most of it is sensitive information one yould probably not give out to everybody without any doubts.

It almost has the characteristics of a trojan horse! This is for sure not the right way to bind people as customers! And Ubisoft had also problems with their activation methods. I think the sales may get down again and people are seeking for untainted game versions without any online nags and the like in the deep black zones of the world wide web. And in my opinion: No one can blame them!

So your options to play BF3 (and other upcoming EA titles):
Either accept the EULA of Origin or deny buying EA titles until EA gives on and makes Origin only optional and NOT mandatory for playing!

So if you think, Google is the best data collecting machine, then you’re wrong! EA can do better and they do it with a more perfid method!
